Philips Innovation Services is an Engineering firm within Philips. They provide resources and services to other business units within Philips and to clients outside of Philips. The Electronic Products & Systems department focuses on product development. Philips Consumer Electronics develop and sell products for the consumer market, like vacuum cleaners and shavers.
As Electronics Designer I was responsible for investigating the required driver for a LED based IPL (=Intensive Pulsed Light) hair removal device. This was as preparation for an announced LED break through by one of their LED suppliers.
My activities were:
- Investigate three energy sources (mains, energy stored in super caps and energy stored in batteries)
- Create driver concepts to drive the LEDs with high energy pulses
- Document and share the outcome with the IPL development team
My investigation led to an overview of suitable energy sources and driver topologies that would give the development team a head start when the new LED technology becomes available.
