LED drivers for horticulture

Horticulture LED solutions develops and sells LED lighting solutions intended for horticulture. They are part of Signify B.V. (formally Philips Lighting). They distinguish a number of segments/applications that all have their own special lighting requirements, like top-lighting to illuminate plants from above and inter-lighting to illuminate in between plants. Due to continuous improvement of the available LEDs it is desired to regularly upgrade the products to either cut costs or to increase the light output.

As Development Engineer Electronics I was responsible for adapting the LED drivers to work with the new adapted loads and to reduce cost where possible.

This involved the following activities:

  • Dimension driver for new operating point
  • Look for and remove redundant building blocks and circuits
  • Reduce cost of the required building blocks and circuits
  • Look for and release alternatives for component that are nearing end of life
  • EMC pre compliance testing to discover and solve potential EMC issues
  • Create design documentation (including functional test instruction) and store it in Teamcenter
  • Arrange and supply sample required for approbation and release testing
  • Together with the software engineer create or update required firmware

I was able to finalize the driver development and release the drivers in time so that together with all the other components the products could be released as planned.
