Wireless power and data transfer demonstrator

Philips Innovation Services is an Engineering firm within Philips. They provide resources and services to other business units within Philips and to clients outside of Philips. The Electronic Products & Systems department focuses on product development. Philips Lighting develops lighting products and was looking for a way to connect sensors to their products wirelessly for both powering the sensor as for transferring data.

As Electronics Designer I was responsible for creating a demonstrator to demonstrate the concept/idea to relevant stakeholders to get budget for a dedicated development project.

For this project I did the following activities:

  • Derived a concept that used off the shelf components (Qi and NFC)
  • Looked for suitable power supply to generate the required voltages
  • Determined the buffer required to allow the sensor to start up without overloading the Qi link
  • Built a demonstrator with an existing street lantern

I was able to create a demonstrator in time that nicely demonstrated the idea to the relevant stakeholders resulting in the required funding for a follow-up project.
